Potential Salmonella contamination prompts Pedigree recall

Franklin, Tenn. — At least 100 bags of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites were recalled today by Mars Petcare U.S. following reports of potential Salmonella contamination.

According to a company-issued statement, the voluntary recall only affects bags sold in Albertsons stores in Southern California and Las Vegas. There have been no complaints or injury reports related to the potential contamination, officials say.

“Last week, a component that should have been on hold due to positive testing results was inadvertently shipped to our Tracy, Calif., facility” and used in the production of the product with best buy dates of July 2009, officials add.

Pet owners can return empty bags of the dry pet food to the store where it was purchased for a full refund. The company advises pet owners who suspect Salmonella infection to contact a veterinarian.

“Our primary concern is the safety and welfare or our pet owners and their pets,” company officials say. It is “out of an abundance of caution” that the recall was issued, they add.
