Davis, Calif. — The University of California-Davis (UC-Davis) School of Veterinary Medicine plans to address animal-welfare issues by forming an entire institute devoted to such interests.

While details are sketchy, a Sept. 5 meeting is scheduled to develop the idea. John E. Madigan, DVM, MS, a professor within the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology, is slated to head the institute, which will bring UC-Davis faculty together with agricultural industry representatives to discuss welfare as it pertains to food animals.

Following the talks, UC-Davis will release more information, officials say.
