Knoxville, Tenn. — Dr. James P. Thompson plans to head the University of Tennessee's veterinary college, effective Oct. 1.

The appointment, announced yesterday, officially fills the position formerly held by Dr. Michael Blackwell, who retired last March.

Thompson comes from the University of Florida, where he works as executive associate dean and professor in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences. He also holds a joint appointment in the UF medical college's Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, a university officials say.

Thompson has authored and co-authored numerous articles for professional publications and journals. He has been a member of several Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges committees. Announcing the appointment, UT Vice President for Agriculture Dr. Joseph Di Pietro writes, "Dr. Thompson brings a wealth and breadth of previous veterinary college-level administrative experience, as well as outstanding skills, knowledge, familiarity, understanding and know-how to the position."

Dr. Leon Potgieter will continue to serve as interim dean until Thompson takes the seat.
