Q: I was reading about the question about people/dog aggression and how you can give your dog a tablespoon of raw honey each day. Howdoes this help the dog? Thanks.
A: I don't know of any solid research on the raw honey, but it does seem to help my own neurotic dog. One very noticeable difference in her is that she copes better with toenail trimming, after several weeks of the daily honey. When I tried stopping the honey, she began freaking out about toenail trimming again.
I first tried it when the mother of a hyperactive child mentioned it had helped her son. The dosage, as nearly as I can find from talking to people who have any ideas about honey for dogs, is about one tablespoon for each 50 pounds of the dog's weight.
If your dog had an immune-compromising health condition -- or was a puppy or elderly dog -- I would be cautious about this, because raw honey could carry some bacteria. And the calories do count -- roughly 50 calories for a tablespoon of honey, so you must allow for that in your dog's diet. Otherwise, it seems a harmless thing to try, and if it helps, then of course that would be good news!
