Q: I am writing in regard to my 10-month old female Miniature Schnauzer who is overly protective. I am not sure if it's being protective or if she is really afraid of people. Of course she barks hysterically when anyone comes to the house, but she keeps it up and actually attacks them, growling aggressively and nipping their feet. She does the same thing if we meet someone while we are out walking.
I should state that she and I live alone. With me she is extremely affectionate and gentle. When my grandson comes over she initially barks at him, but makes up to him in a short time. I know that she should be exposed to more people, but everyone is afraid of her. I keep a "Halti-collar" on her whenever she goes out. Do you have any suggestions for me, please? Anything would be very appreciated. Thank you.
A: I suggest you ask your veterinarian to recommend a trainer or behavior specialist to meet with you and the dog privately, with the goal of getting you and your dog ready to enter an obedience class, and helping you select the most appropriate class in your area. An orderly obedience class is usually the best place to get your dog used to working around others without going nuts, and give you solid technical handling skills to control her.
The Halti is a very good idea, since it does not increase defensiveness but gives you control. It should help you in class at first. Until you get better control over her, I suggest you put her in another room before letting visitors in, where she can't even see them.
Some of this is probably genetic, and will need to be managed rather than being something you can completely change. I hope things go well.
