Course Information:
What is pericardial effusion and why do we care? Pericardial effusion is fluid that surrounds the heart within the pericardium. While it is normal to have a small amount, for those afflicted with abnormal amounts of pericardial effusion, a life-threatening condition (cardiac tamponade) may result requiring quick identification and treatment by the veterinary team. Clinical signs and good history taking by the veterinary technician can identify cases of pericardial effusion early. Emergent treatment will generally consist of pericardiocentesis and stabilization of cardiac output. This class will discuss how you can help to identify and stabilize cases of pericardial effusion when they come to your hospital or clinic.
- Understand what pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade are and their clinical impact.
- Identify clinical signs of cardiac tamponade.
- Understand the goals of emergent treatment and stabilization.
