Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course is geared toward veterinary assistants and veterinary technicians that work in emergency medicine and have a basic understanding of small animal physiology

Course Description:
Toxicities are common emergencies seen in general practices and emergency facilities. Familiarity by the veterinary support staff of the most common and dangerous toxins, along with their treatments, is helpful in reducing their toxic effects. This course will cover presentations of toxic patients, the most common toxicities seen in veterinary patients, antidotes, decontamination methods and other treatment modalities a veterinarian may prescribe for toxic patients.

Week 1 (Real Time Session November 22): Presentation of the Toxic Patient

Week 3 (Real Time Session December 6): Common Cardiac, Hematologic, and Renal Toxicities

Week 4 (Real Time Session December 13): Common Liver, Gastrointestinal and Neurologic Toxicities
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Brandy Helewa, CVT, RVT, VTS (ECC) has been in the veterinary field since 1995, and has been in emergency and critical care since 2002. She currently works full time as administrative staff for the Veterinary Support Personal Network and Veterinary Information Network. She also is an adjunct instructor for Penn Foster�s veterinary technician program and mentors several of their students directly. She has authored articles for websites and journals and has reviewed several textbooks for VSPN and for the NAVTA Journal as well. She is currently co-writing a chapter on CPR for an upcoming emergency and critical care book for veterinary technicians, and has previous co-written two chapters for the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians (AVECCT) study guide. She was a founding member of the Veterinary Health Care Team of Arizona and is a member of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS) and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). She currently is a member of NAVTA�s Legal Committee. She has also been the State Representative to NAVTA for both Arizona and California, and in 2005, was the Arizona Veterinary Technician of the Year. In 2012, she passed the veterinary technician specialty (VTS) exam in Emergency in Critical Care given by AVECCT. Along with her kindred spirit, Liz Hughston, and a bevy of her amazing colleagues, she facilitates a 6 month long study group for those interested in pursuing their VTS in emergency and critical care. She provides hands-on labs and lectures for colleagues, coworkers and students, and began lecturing internationally in 2012. She belongs to 4 cats (Halo, Tula, Dexter and John Snow) and one amazing dog, Raina and is married to the most amazing man in the world. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, hiking, camping and spending time with her family. As a breast cancer fighter, she enjoys meeting, getting to know, and sharing her experiences with her new �pink sisters.� Her passion is providing interesting, relevant and challenging continuing education to her colleagues while also working to elevate the status of the veterinary technology profession and the capabilities of veterinary technicians around the world.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
