Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff that are actively interested in a better understanding of toxins and their effects.

In this course, we will review common toxic ingestions for dogs and cats. We’ll discuss toxic principles, LD50, and antidotal or supportive therapies. Each week will bring a new discussion of a specific set of toxins-from household products, to medications, rodenticides/insect repellants, etc. Week 1 (Real Time Session August 12): Toxic Principles and Uncommon Intoxications
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand the concept of LD50.
- Explain the value of a poison control consult.
- Discuss common clinical signs of toxicity.
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Understand the toxic principle of household toxins.
- Discuss the toxic principles and treatment options for grapes and raisins.
- Understand the toxic principles and treatment options for lilies.
- Discuss the toxic principles and treatment options for chocolate.
- Discuss the toxic principles and treatment options for fertilizer.
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Understand the toxic principles and treatment options of NSAIDs.
- Discuss the toxic principles and treatment options of THC.
- Understand the toxic principles and treatment options of antidepressant drugs.
- Discuss the toxic principles and treatment options of muscle relaxants.

- Understand the differences of types of rodenticides available.
- Discuss the clinical signs of intoxication and treatment options available.

Required Textbook: There is no required textbook for this course. About the Instructor:
Jeff Backus, RVT, VTS(ECC) started as a veterinary assistant in general practice in 1995. He began working in ECC in 2004. He became an RVT in 2009 and was an ER/ICU Supervisor at Animal Urgent Care for over 12 years. Jeffrey also taught part time at his alma mater, Heritage College, for 7 years. In 2013, he became credentialed as a VTS(ECC), sat on the AVECCTN exam committee for 3 years, and now is the committee chair of the credentialing committee. He has been on the Board of Directors for the California RVT Association for 6 years, currently serving as Vice President. Most recently, he moved to Massachusetts to join academia, working as an ECC technician at the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. He is also a frequent lecturer and speaker on all topics related to emergency and critical care, with a focus on toxicology, ECG, pain management, and endocrine emergencies. Total CE Credit: 7.5

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
