Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course is geared toward veterinary team members that want to learn dental charting, oral anatomy, basic dental pathology, use and care of dental equipment and client education.

Course Description:
This course will help the beginner technician understand the basics of veterinary dentistry and act at a refresher to more experienced technicians. The course will review dental anatomy, terminology and basic charting techniques. Periodontal disease and common oral pathology will be discussed and the necessary equipment and maintenance of equipment needed for an efficient dental operatory. In addition, client education and recommended home care techniques and products will be addressed
Week 1 (Real Time Session June 21):
Oral Anatomy and Charting
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- identify specific tooth anatomy and understand the accepted numbering system.
- know the normal anatomy and finding in an oral examination and identify abnormal findings.
- understand common dental indices and document the results of the oral examination for each patient.
Week 2 (Real Time Session June 28):
Understanding Periodontal Disease and Oral Pathology
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- explain the risks, causes and disease processes involved in periodontal disease.
- recognize pathology commonly found in the oral cavity of companion animals.
Week 3 (Real Time Session July 5):
Dental Equipment: Use and Maintenance
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- recognize necessary dental equipment needed for a efficient dental operatory.
- know how each piece of equipment should be used during a procedure.
- know how to properly maintain dental equipment and when equipment needs to be replaced.
Week 4 (Real Time Session July 12):
Client Education and Home Care Products
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- apply techniques to properly advocate for home care for patients
- discuss and recommend home care techniques and products
- explain understand the science behind home care products and how products should be used effectively.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Mary L. Berg, BS, LATG, RVT, VTS (Dentistry) received her B.S. in Biology/Microbiology from South Dakota State University, her A.S. in Laboratory Animal Science from Redlands Community College, and her A.S. in Veterinary Technology from St. Petersburg College. She is a Charter member of the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians and received her Veterinary Technician Specialty in Dentistry in June 2006. Mary is currently serving as the treasurer of the AVDT and the AVDS and is the President of the Kansas Veterinary Technician Association (KVTA) and the President-Elect of National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). Mary is also a board moderator for the Veterinary Support Personnel Network. Her memberships include the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians, NAVTA, KVTA and the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry. Mary worked in research for over 13 years, specializing in on products aimed at improving oral health of companion animals and continues to work with companies to evaluate the efficacy of their products. In addition to her research background, she was the practice manager and dental specialist at a general practice for over 7 years, taught veterinary technology for 2 years and is currently the president of Beyond the Crown Veterinary Education, a veterinary dental consulting service. She has authored or co-authored over 60 publications including publications in the Journal of Dental Research, the Veterinary Technician Journal, DVM 360, Veterinary Team Brief and the NAVTA journal and has been a speaker and wet lab instructor at numerous state and national conferences.
