Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Level and Prerequisites: This basic course is designed for veterinary technicians or assistants that have recently entered the field and would like to advance their knowledge of intensive care unit protocols and monitoring.
VSPN CE Course: Open to VSPN members. This course has been RACE approved for veterinary technicians only. The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is RACE Provider #22.

Course Description:
The intensive care unit is the core of most veterinary hospitals. This course will help give you the knowledge to be able to manage your cases well. We will start with infection control by learning how to protect yourself and patients with suggested protocols for the hospitalized patient. We will present a logical approach to patient assessment and nursing care. This course will also bring you up to date with the current recommendations for performing CPR. Medical math will be covered, calculating drug dosages, constant rate of infusions, and nutritional requirements. This course will also discuss shift work and some methods to prevent compassion fatigue and burnout to benefit both you and your patients.

This course consists of four (4) Real Time Sessions of ninety (90) minutes each, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session). Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructors:
Katy Waddell has been in the veterinary field for 42 years in small animal, mixed animal, specialty referral practices, 24/7 facilities as well as in academia and as an author. Katy currently works with the Feline and Canine Internal Medicine Services at Texas A & M University and is responsible for providing nursing care and student instruction for these services. She also is the staff liaison/mentor for multiple student organizations providing wet labs. She lectures and promotes education to veterinary technicians to improve patient care and advocacy on a local, regional, national and international basis. She is the proud recipient of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association 2013 Veterinary Technician of the Year Award. Paula Plummer has been in the veterinary field for over 15 years in academia and small animal private practice. Paula attained her VTS (ECC) in 2011 and her VTS (SAIM) in 2014. She currently works at Texas A & M University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in the Feline Internal Medicine Department. She has worked most of her career in emergency and critical care medicine and feline internal medicine. She teaches a variety of skill labs to veterinary students and technicians and has lectured at several conferences and online CE courses on internal medicine, emergency and critical care topics.

Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session April 6): Infection Control and Infectious Diseases: How Prepared Are You as a Care Giver?
Content: This Real Time Session will provide insight and instruction into infection prevention and control strategies which should be an important part of every veterinary facility. These protocols should be designed to protect patients, owners, veterinary personnel and the community. All veterinary personnel should play an active role in protecting every person and animal associated with the veterinary clinic. Routine practices, risk reduction, and risk assessment of animals and personnel with regard to disease transmission and disease susceptibility will be covered.

Week 2 (Real Time Session April 13): Patient Assessment and CPR
Content: During the start of a career in the ICU learning how to assess a patient and knowing every role in CPR can be challenging. Patient assessment will be presented in a logical step by step approach to help further the ICU technician's skill set. The latest CPR recommendations using the RECOVER Initiative will be discussed thoroughly.

Week 3 (Real Time Session April 20): And Who Doesn�t Love Medical Math?
Content: During this Real Time Session we will review weight conversions, how to read and understand drug labels, calculate fluid needs and replacement calculations, calculate nutritional needs, dosage calculations, CRI calculations and administration.

Week 4 (Real Time Session April 27): Avoiding Burnout in the ICU
Content: Burnout and compassion fatigue are two things an ICU technician battles on a regular basis. It is no secret that the nature of the job, hours worked and hospital politics can play a negative role in veterinary medicine. Learn how to take control of stress, decompress and get to know when your body has reached its limit. Everyone deserves to take care of themselves.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
