Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course is designed for the entire anesthesia team to review the nursing care and techniques involved in
anesthesia induction chamber use. The instructor encourages any veterinary staff with experience handling or inducing anesthetic
patients utilizing chambers to enroll in this course. Team enrollment is highly encouraged.
VSPN CE Course:
This course has RACE approval for veterinary technicians only.

Course Description:
Feline anesthesia is not the same as canine anesthesia, and unfortunately this translates to a higher mortality rate for our feline patients.
In this course we will discuss how to integrate simple messages into your practice that will produce calm feline patients,
the first step in an uneventful anesthesia procedure. The dangers of induction chamber use will be explored, not only to the patient
but also the staff members. The end goal is to produce calm feline patients whose owners will not dread bringing them back to
our practice and thus increase your practice's bottom line.
This course consists of one (1) Real Time Session of ninety (90) minutes, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple
choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session).
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- describe how to create a cat friendly practice
- explain how to safely anesthetize feline patients, quickly and efficiently without the use of an induction chamber.
- outline the cost of each induction method.

About the Instructors:
Brenda Feller developed an interest in anesthesia as a student at Michigan State University. After graduation she worked in a general practice for a few years before moving on to the Anesthesia Department at the University of Illinois Veterinary College. In specialty practice her main focus has been anesthesia and pain management. She is also a featured speaker on the topic of anesthesia at a variety of veterinary conferences in the United States and Canada. Brenda is also a VSPN message board moderator for the anesthesia and pain management folders.

Week 1 (Real Time Session May 8):
Calming Felines and Administering Anesthesia
Content:
During this single Real Time Session, we will discuss techniques on how to calm your patients prior to anesthesia. Reasoning as to why it is safer for both patients and staff to not use an induction chamber will be discussed. An overview of how you calculate the exact cost of each induction method with the aid of mathematical formulas will be presented. We will then demonstrate how to easily induce 'disgruntled' feline patients with injectable anesthetic drugs.
