Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course is designed for veterinary technicians working toward a specialty certification in emergency/critical care, small animal internal medicine, clinical pathology or those working in or wishing more in depth understanding of canine and feline coagulopathy.
VSPN CE Course:This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinary technicians only.
The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is RACE Provider #22.
Course Description:
This course will encompass the normal hemostasis process and will include diagnostic testing for coagulopathies. The coagulopathies will be broken down into diseases that affect primary and secondary hemostasis. Discussion of some current therapies for the various dysfunctions will be included. Recognition and a deeper understanding of the physiological process of hemostasis and the diseases affecting the process will enhance the veterinary technician's ability to provide patient care in the emergent or critical care setting. Case-based interactions will be posted on the message boards to help the participant in the understanding and the application of current nursing techniques.
This course consists of four (4) Real Time Sessions of ninety (90) minutes each, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple
choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session).
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- breakdown and diagram the coagulation cascade in the normal patient.
- discuss the different tests available to differentiate derangements of the coagulation cascade as they relate to primary and secondary hemostasis.
- classify current methods of treating/managing coagulopathies involving primary hemostasis.
- classify current methods of treating/managing coagulopathies involving secondary hemostasis.
Course Materials: Course materials will be available
in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook(s):
There is no required textbook for this course.
Recommended Textbook(s):
Suggested references will be included within the course library.

Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session February 3):
Physiology of Normal Hemostasis
Content:
This session will be a review of normal hemostasis in the canine and feline. In depth vascular integrity, primary hemostasis, secondary hemostasis and fibrinolysis will be covered. A comprehensive understanding of the normal hemostasis process will provide the participant with the ability to detect alterations in their patients.
Week 2 (Real Time Session February 10):
Diagnostic Testing for a Coagulopathy
Content:
This session will cover all diagnostic tests needed in a hospital to confirm a coagulopathy in the patient. In detail tests including but not limited to the following: activated clotting time, buccal mucosal bleeding time, prothrombin time, partial prothrombin time, D-dimer, etc. The who, what, when, where and why's of each test is essential for understanding a coagulopathy in the patient.
Week 3 (Real Time Session February 17):
Coagulopathy Involving Primary Hemostasis
Content:
This session will cover diseases that primarily affect primary hemostasis and discuss therapies currently available for each disease. This session will cover primary hemostatic diseases such as thrombocytopenia, platelet function defects, and von Willebrand disease.
Week 4 (Real Time Session February 24):
Coagulopathy Involving Secondary Hemostasis
Content:
This session will cover diseases that primarily affect secondary hemostasis with therapies and discuss therapies for each disease. This session will cover secondary hemostatic diseases including but not limited to; hemophilia, vitamin K deficiency, liver failure and disseminated intravascular coagulation.
