Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience
in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first
Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session
is up to 1 hour in length.

Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course is geared toward veterinary practice managers and owners that play a direct role in staff training.
VSPN CE Course: This course has been RACE approved for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. This course is approved by the VHMA for CVPM credits.
The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is RACE Provider #22.
Course Description:
You have spent a lot of time choosing the right new hire based upon his/her aptitude and attitude.
Now it is time to instill the tools to succeed in your veterinary hospital through proper training, coaching, and support.
Your training team can encourage, offer appropriate feedback, and lead by example.
Having this empowered team in place is imperative. Phase training allows your new hire to understand how the orientation period
will unfold, scheduled check-is and that they will be supported by a training team.
In this manner the new hire is given a foundation for a positive career and getting them started on the right foot with your team.
The training team will include a mentor as the go-to person and a team member who knows the ropes and can be a sounding board during the
transition. A training sequence of events, also known as 'morphing, storming, norming and performing,' may occur within your current team
and understanding this phenomenon may help your team adjust to the new hire and meld into a cohesive, trusting team.

This course consists of three (3) Real Time Sessions of ninety (90) minutes each, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple
choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session).
The instructor places emphasis on Message Board participation as an important component of the learning process.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- hire for aptitude and attitude.
- update job descriptions, supervisor roles and where new hire positions fit into the team organizational chart.
- define a 6-8 phase training program with regularly scheduled check-ins.
- establish a training team and lead trainer.
- offer support to the lead trainer and provide feedback by management.
- evaluate learning and teaching styles of new hires as adult learners and trainers.
- introduce new hire to lead trainer and outline expectations of trainer/trainee relationship.
- identify a mentor and pair with the new hire outlining expectations of mentee/mentor relationship.
- introduce new hire to phase training timeframe, expected performance goals, and reviews.
- review employee handbook, define appropriate forms, and discuss the hospital's mission, vision, and values.
- utilize standard operating procedures in phase training.
- build team trust through teambuilding activities to include educational opportunities in skillful games.

About the Instructor:
Rebecca Rose has been a CVT for several years and is currently Lead Consultant at CATALYST Veterinary Practice Consultants, LLC. She has authored two texts on veterinary technician careers, writes peer reviewed articles, is a contributing author in a text book for veterinary technicians as well as sits on several professional councils and committees
Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session May 6):
Establish Training Team and Phase Training for New Hire
Content:
Initially, we will review the primary tools for success in team development; job descriptions, employee handbooks, standard operating procedures, performance reviews, organizational chart and the hospital's mission, vision, and values. Once we have defined and updated those needed tools, we will discuss how to hire new team members for both aptitude and attitude. The winning candidate's skills and outlook will benefit the team and the services you provide. By the end of week 1, participants will have determined their training team, know their training documents are in order and outlined the phase training program for the new hire.
Week 2 (Real Time Session May 13):
Introduce New Hire to Training Team and Phase Training Program
Content:
During week 2, we will elaborate upon train the trainer opportunities, adult learning concepts and resources. At this time we will introduce the new hire to the dynamic training team, establish expectations during the training process, explain the difference between the trainer and the mentor roles, and begin walking through the well-designed 6-8 week program. Participants will discover that a lot of foundational work must be completed before in-depth training can occur. This is certainly one of those cases where a pound of prevention (defining and updating all the documents required) is worth a pound of cure (a well-supported training team and new hire!).
Week 3 (Real Time Session May 20):
Embracing Phase Training and Positive Outcome
Content:
Now, phase training is in full swing, your new hire has been properly introduced to their job description, OSHA training, employee handbook and mission/vision/values. They are being coached, trained, and given all the tools for building their career at your veterinary hospital. Check-ins with the trainer and mentor are occurring and appropriate feedback is being offered. Your Dream Team has gone through all the phases of morphing, storming, norming and performing. As teams continue to morph and perform, managers including teambuilding opportunities may find their staff continue to grow and reinvent themselves. Near the end of this session, we will conclude with just that; teambuilding for camaraderie and improved skill sets.
CE CREDITS: 4.5

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
