Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course is geared toward new and recent grads looking
for practical guidance as they venture forth into the unpredictable world of
small animal general practice. It may also serve as a review for more experienced
practitioners or as an introduction for those transitioning from other practice areas.
There are no prerequisites.
VIN CE Course: Open to ALL recent grads and VIN Members.
This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians.
Course Information:
This course is the second of a multiple module series designed to give
an overview of common cases/presentations in small animal day practice.
Different topics will be presented each week, and each discussion will
include highlights on pathophysiology, case presentation, differentials,
diagnostic approach, treatment recommendations, and case examples where
appropriate. Important non-technical skills will also be included.
Week 1 (Real Time Session September 12, 2016):
Staff Communications
Presenter: Susan Cohen

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- improve on time management skills.
- better communicate with clients on sensitive issues
(money, adherence to treatment, medical mistakes).
- manage interpersonal issues at work.
Week 2 (Real Time Session September 19, 2016):
Common Presentations
Presenter: Julie Meadows
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- recognize and address common presentations seen in everyday practice,
including minor injuries/major drama (bleeding toenails, footpad lacerations,
bite/scratch wounds, etc), lumps and bumps.
- give differentials for these common cases.
- develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans.
Week 3 (Real Time Session September 26, 2016):
Genito/Urinary Tract Issues
Presenter: Tom Hansen
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- recognize and address common genito/urinary tract issues
in dogs and cats (Bladder stones, FLUTD, incontinence, spraying),
Pyometra, Prostatitis.
- give differentials for these common cases.
- develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans.
Week 4 (Real Time Session October 3, 2016):
Dentistry and Orthopedics
Presenter: Carl Darby
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- perform common dentistry procedures including oral exams,
charting, and radiographs.
- recognize and address common orthopedic diseases including slipped disks,
cruciate tears, and hip dysplasia.
- give differentials for these common cases.
- develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenters:
Susan Cohen is a Social Worker specializing in the Human-Animal Bond.
She spent 28 years at the Animal Medical Center in New York and now works as a consultant
assisting veterinary practices with issues of communication, stress, and morale.
Julie Meadows graduated from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
in 1988 with a focus in small animal medicine. She entered private practice in California's
Central Valley, where she practiced small animal medicine, surgery and emergency medicine.
After 20 years in private practice, including 10 as a practice owner, she returned to UC Davis
where she is now Chief of Community Medicine and an assistant professor in the Department
of Medicine and Epidemiology.
Thomas Hansen is a graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Canine and Feline Practice).
He is in general and emergency practice in the San Francisco East Bay Area.
His favorite areas of practice are internal medicine, emergency medicine, and ultrasound.
Carl Darby attended Cambridge University School of Veterinary Medicine
and graduated with honors in 1991. After working in private practice, Dr. Darby became a board
certified specialist in Avian Medicine in 2003 and has owned Seneca Falls veterinary hospital
since 2006.
