Course Information:
This course will cover the regulatory landscape of using antibiotics in food animals. It is designed to be a companion course to the food animal antimicrobial resistance webinar. The course will cover applicable United States regulations as well as the history of how we got to where we are today. There will be a detailed discussion of the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) regulations and a walk-through of how to write a VFD. To earn a certificate of completion the participant must complete all learning modules and score 80% or better on the end-of-course test. Completion of the course will take a minimum of 97 minutes. Participants must complete the participation requirements by June 30, 2023 to be eligible for a certificate. Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
- Explain US restrictions for antibiotic use in food animals.
- Identify antibiotics with ELDU restrictions in the United States.
- Write a legal VFD.
- Explain what each section of the VFD is for.
- Describe the veterinarian requirements for VFDs.
- Explain how medicated feeds are handled in minor species.
Level and Prerequisites: This basic VIN CE self-study course is open for enrollment to veterinarians actively interested in US laws regarding antibiotic use in food animals. This course is open to VIN members only.
Accreditation: This non-interactive course is approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-800067)
