This
intermediate course will be open to veterinarians actively interested in
extending their knowledge of feline medicine.

Course Information:
This course focuses upon extending the participants' knowledge of feline medicine,
covering a variety of topics: oncology, rehabilitation therapy, fluid analysis,
chronic pain syndromes, lower urinary tract health, differentials for vomiting,
and the responsible/practical use of antibiotics.
Week 1 (Real Time Session August 24, 2016):
Top 10 Advances in Feline Oncology; Rehabilitation Therapy for the Feline Patient

Format: Audio
Objectives (Oncology): Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- better understand, comprehend, and utilize the latest diagnostics
and treatments for cats with doxorubicin extravasation as well as a
wide variety of cancers including lymphoma, mast cell tumor,
and vaccine-associated sarcoma.
Objectives (Rehabilitation): Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- recognize when a rehabilitation plan is indicated.
- list some of the rehabilitation modalities that are appropriate for feline patients.
- recognize how they can incorporate some basic rehabilitation therapy into their practice.
Week 2 (Real Time Session August 31, 2016):
The lost art of fluid analysis - no cells, no fluid, no diagnosis
Presenter: Steven Bailey, DVM, DABVP (Feline)

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- list options for obtaining diagnostic samples.
- assess the diagnostic samples in-house before sending them off to the pathologist.
- save their clients some time and expense that can result from utilizing an outside referral.
- help their patients by initiating appropriate therapy sooner.
Week 3 (Real Time Session September 7, 2016):
Feline Chronic Pain Syndromes - More than Musculoskeletal

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- have a greater awareness of chronic painful conditions in cats.
- recognize the signs of pain in cats that have adapted to living with pain over time.
- understand how neuropathic and inflammatory pain differ.
- choose appropriate therapies.
- discuss the evidence base for different therapeutic modalities.
Week 4 (Real Time Session September 14, 2016):
Lower Urinary Tract Health - Metabolism and Stress
Presenter: Margie Scherk, DVM, DABVP (Feline)
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand how stress influences health.
- identify potential stressors for cats that may result in disease.
- list the Five Freedoms of animal welfare.
- ask appropriate questions so as to recognize unmet needs of the cat in the home environment.
- provide recommendations to optimize the cat's home environment
in order to reduce the frequency of lower urinary tract flare-ups.
Week 5 (Real Time Session September 21, 2016):
Retch, heave, yack, gag 'n' hurl - What do we really mean?

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- clearly communicate the patient's dysfunction to the owner.
- list the first steps needed to investigate the dysfunction.
- confidently make a diagnosis.
- help their patients by initiating appropriate therapy sooner.
Week 6 (Real Time Session September 28, 2016):
Practical and Responsible Use of Antibiotics for Cats
Presenter: Kelly St. Denis, MSc, DVM, DABVP (Feline Practice)
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- discuss typical bacterial infections in cats and how these impact antibiotic selection.
- list the antibiotics most commonly used in feline practice and know how to apply them.
- recognize when antibiotics might be indicated.
- select and collect appropriate tissues for culture and sensitivity testing.
- interpret basic sensitivity patterns for culture reports.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.
