Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians,
veterinary technicians/technologists, support staff, shelter
professionals and others actively interested in animal relocation
(moving animals from one organization or individual over some
distance to another) and/or interested in shelter medicine.
There are no course prerequisites.

Course Information:
You are invited to learn more about animal shelter relocation and
transport programs in this 4 week course.
Whether you are considering starting a relocation program, already source
or receive animals, have questions about relocation programs or don't yet
know much about how animals are moving between shelters, this course
will address your interest. We will follow the pathway animals take
from source shelters, during transport, to destination shelters,
covering selection of at-risk animals, minimum health requirements,
and medical best practices.
Week 1 (Real Time Session September 1, 2016):
An Introduction to Animal Relocation

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Discuss the challenges veterinarians experience in animal relocation programs.
- Summarize opportunities that animal relocation programs provide to
source and destination organizations.
- Reference written guidelines and standards of care used in animal relocation.
- Explain the critical pieces of a typical relocation program.
Week 2 (Real Time Session September 8, 2016):
Animal Relocation at Source Facilities

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe the responsibilities of source organizations
participating in relocation programs.
- Explain considerations for animal selection and care at source organizations.
- Describe critical strategies for source organizations to minimize risks
associated with animal relocation programs.
- Assist source facilities in the development of appropriate protocols
and practices to facilitate participation in animal relocation programs.
Week 3 (Real Time Session September 15, 2016):
Animal Relocation during Transport

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Know the minimal and/or legally required paperwork and processes for animal relocation.
- Follow existing guidelines for different modes of transport during the transport process.
- Plan for emergencies during transport.
- Advise others on how to create a safe and humane transportation experience.
Week 4 (Real Time Session September 22, 2016):
Animal Relocation at Destination Facilities
Presenter: Stephanie Janeczko, DVM, MS, DABVP, CAWA
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe the responsibilities of destination organizations
participating in relocation programs.
- Describe critical strategies for destination organizations to
minimize risks associated with animal relocation programs.
- Assist destination facilities in the development of appropriate protocols
and practices to facilitate participation in animal relocation programs.
- Summarize post-relocation care and outcomes for relocated animals
and their influence on the community.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenters:
Miranda Spindel serves as the Veterinary Information Network's
shelter medicine consultant. Dr. Spindel initiated and completed the first residency
in shelter medicine with a Master of Clinical Sciences offered though Colorado State University.
She currently lives in Colorado and works with shelters across the country in her role
as Senior Director of Shelter Medicine in the department of Research and Development
at the ASPCA. Dr. Spindel previously was the Senior Director of Veterinary Outreach
at the ASPCA from 2010 to 2013. Dr. Spindel was Shelter Medicine Organizing Committee Member
& Residency Committee for Shelter Medicine for American Board Veterinary Practitioners.
Stephanie Janeczko worked in small animal practice with a variety of
shelters and rescue groups before returning to Cornell as its first shelter medicine resident.
Dr. Janeczko is board certified in both Shelter Medicine and Canine/Feline practice
through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and is also a certified animal
welfare administrator. As the Senior Director of Shelter Medical Programs, she helps
animal welfare organizations across the country improve their medical programs and
provides shelter medicine expertise and support for a variety of ASPCA departments and programs.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to
VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
