Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists actively interested in hyperglycemic camelids.
VIN CE Course: Open to VIN and VSPN members. This non-interactive course is approved by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 22-43951)

Course Description:
Hyperglycemia is a very common condition in camelids so it is beneficial for veterinarians to recognize the common causes and determine if treatment/interventions are needed. A variety of hyperglycemia situations will be discussed and treatment options provided for each that can be implemented in both farm and clinical settings. The course is asynchronous so if you have questions, you can post them in the VIN Ruminants Message Folder for Dr. Byers and others to respond.

This course will consist of 1 non-interactive module. Modules will include video segments to be watched, poll quiz questions to be answered and an end-of-course test.

To earn a certificate of completion the participant must, watch all video segments, answer all poll quiz-questions and attain a score of 80% for the end-of-course test. Completion of 1 module (videos, reading handouts, quizzes, and end-of-course test) will take a minimum of 79 minutes to complete. Participants must complete the participation requirements by December 31, 2020 to be eligible for a certificate.

Module 1: Hyperglycemic Camelids
Total Time: 79 minutes
Video: 69 minutes
End of Course Test: 10 minutes
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

  • Discuss the glycemic disorders seen in camelids
  • Explain the clinical signs and diagnostic tests
  • Compare and explain the various insulin products
  • Develop a treatment plan
  • Determine if on farm or clinic case management is needed

About the Presenter:
Stacey Byers obtained her DVM from Washington State University and completed her agriculture animal internship and residency at WSU as well. She is boarded in large animal internal medicine (ACVIM). Dr. Byers is an Associate Professor at St George's University School of Veterinary Medicine teaching in the Large Animal Medicine and Surgery Department. She also serves as a Consultant in the Ruminants and Swine folder on VIN. Previously Dr. Byers worked at Colorado State University in the Livestock Medicine and Surgery department and operated a livestock-oriented ambulatory practice.
