Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians, veterinary students, and new grads
interested in reviewing pet bird husbandry, diagnostics, diseases and therapy.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians (VIN members only) and veterinary students.
This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians.

Course Description:
This is a basic presentation of how to approach birds in practice. It includes:
- A review of the common disease conditions by pet bird species
(psittacines and select finches).
- The common clinical signs for many diseases will be listed.
- Diagnostic tests commonly used will be described.
This course consists of two (2) 2-hour Real Time Sessions, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- generate lists of disease differentials when they are presented with an ill bird for examination.
- determine appropriate diagnostic testing and be able to interpret the results.
- list some of the common pathogens found in popular avian species.

in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.

About the Instructors:
Dr. Drury Reavill is a VIN consultant (Aquatic Animal Medicine Folder)
and has over 25 years of experience in avian and exotic clinical practice, laboratory
diagnostics and pathology.
She graduated from Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986
and practiced at the Avian Medical Center of Sacramento, as well as provided clinical
consultation and laboratory services to practitioners through California Avian Laboratory
(a national service exclusively devoted to avian and exotic animals) and California
Veterinary Diagnostic Labs of West Sacramento.
She completed her residency in anatomic pathology (including instruction in zoo pathology
and course work at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology) and gained board certification
from American College of Veterinary Pathology (ACVP) in 2000. Drury is also a Diplomate
of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, obtaining Avian Practice Certification
in 1993 (recertified 2003 and 2013) and Reptile and Amphibian Certification in 2013.
Dr. Rose Fiskett is a premier avian clinician who has over 25 years of
experience in avian and exotic clinical practice, including 10 years as a telephone
consultant for exotics with a major reference laboaratory, managing health programs in
multiple pet stores, and teaching avian, exotic, lab animal and zoo medicine to
veterinary technician students.
Dr. Fiskett graduated from the University of Pennsylvania - School of Veterinary Medicine
in 1982, worked as an associate and relief veterinarian, lab animal veterinarian and
owned her companion animal (birds, exotics, dog, cats, reptiles and wildlife) practice
for 18 years. In addition, she has worked in regulatory medicine and as Program Director
for Veterinary Technology. She was initially board certified by the American Board of
Veterinary Practitioners in Avian Medicine in 1994, recertified in 2004 and 2014 (pending).
In addition, she certified in Exotic Companion Mammals in 2009.

Week 1 (Real Time Session March 22, 2015):
Small Pet Birds
Content:
The presentation purpose is to review the common disease conditions
by pet bird species (small psittacines and select finches). The clinical signs,
select diagnostics, and differential diagnosis will be covered.
Week 2 (Real Time Session March 29, 2015):
Large Pet Birds
Content:
The presentation purpose is to review the common disease conditions by pet bird
species specifically the large psittacines. The clinical signs, select diagnostics,
and differential diagnosis will be covered.
CE Credits: 4
Tuition: VIN Member $84 ($76 early bird special if enrolled by March 1, 2015)
FREE for veterinary students and veterinarians who graduated in 2012 or later.
