Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians and
veterinary technicians/technologists actively interested in
the supportive medical treatment of arachnids, millipedes, and centipedes.
No previous invertebrate handling or experience is necessary.

Course Information:
This course is designed to provide basic information on arachnids and selected invertebrates.
We will cover basic arachnid, millipede, and centipede biology, anatomy, husbandry specifics,
breeding and raising of young, and common diseases and treatments you may see in private
practice or breeding facilities.
Week 1 (Real Time Session May 2, 2017):
Basics for Examining Arthropod Pets
Presenter: Ken Harekwicz, VMD
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe level of experience in practice.
- understand where people obtain these pets.
- describe the correct way to transport the pet to the office.
- ask species relevant questions when taking a history.
- perform a physical exam of the patient.
- safely handle the pet and perform an examination.
Week 2 (Real Time Session May 9, 2017):
Tarantulas and Spiders
Presenter: Ken Harekwicz, VMD
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- recognize some of the common species seen and kept by hobbyists.
- identify what is normal and what is abnormal.
- ask species relevant questions of the owner.
- discuss the tarantula species that are typically kept as pets.
- discuss the spider species that are typically kept as pets.
Week 3 (Real Time Session May 16, 2017):
Scorpions, Centipedes, and Millipedes

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- discuss the scorpion species that are typically kept as pets.
- discuss the centipede species that are typically kept as pets.
- discuss the millipede species that are typically kept as pets.
- identify what is normal and what is abnormal.

Week 4 (Real Time Session May 23, 2017):
Basics of Arthropod Husbandry

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe the basics of husbandry.
- explain how to keep and maintain tarantulas.
- explain how to keep and maintain selected species of spiders
such as are typically kept as pets.
- explain how to keep and maintain scorpions kept as pets.
- explain how to keep and maintain centipedes kept as pets.
- explain how to keep and maintain millipedes kept as pets.
- discuss food items for these pets and where to acquire them.
- discuss the use of sublimates added to food items.
- apply husbandry tips and tricks.
Week 5 (Real Time Session May 30, 2017):
Selected Husbandry Problems, Diseases, and Treatments in Arthropods
Presenter: Ken Harekwicz, VMD
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- address common husbandry problems found in selected species.
- recognize and treat common diseases of selected species.
- understand the breeding practices for selected species.
- understand the challenges faced when raising young of selected species.
- discuss the future of these pets in Veterinary Medicine.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Required Textbook: There is no required textbook for this course.
About the Presenter:
Kenneth Harkewicz attended the University of Pennsylvania�s School
of Veterinary Medicine and upon graduating, entered a 20-month exotic animal
externship in Australia (Queensland and the Northern Territories).
He is an exotic animal veterinarian who has practiced in the California
Bay Area since 1985. For the past 20 years, he has been the Senior Exotic
Veterinarian at Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital, a 19-vet specialty and general
practice hospital, where he is often called upon to care for or consult on
arthropod, amphibian, and reptile cases.
Dr. Harkewicz has served as a VIN (Veterinary Information Network)
Consultant on invertebrates from 1999 to present.
He oversees the health of the entire collection of exotic animals
(including spiders, centipedes, and millipedes) for the East Bay Vivarium,
Wonder World Pet Supply in Richmond, California � a major importer/exporter
of these pets. He is the one of the few California Bay Area veterinarians
who treats and examines invertebrate pets.
Dr. Harkewicz cares for an extensive collection of reptiles, amphibians, and
invertebrates both at home and at work. He has been keeping and breeding these
exotic pets for over 40 years and is a frequent lecturer to veterinary students,
technicians, and media outlets (TV, newspapers, magazines).
