Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians wildlife medicine and diseases. Participants are expected to have some prior knowledge of wildlife medicine.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is RACE Provider #22.

Course Description:
The primary purpose of this course is to provide a basic to intermediate understanding of the principles of care of wildlife. The course will include details on the common syndromes with which wildlife patients present to a clinic, the approach to triage, emergency treatment and monitoring of the wildlife patient, the most notable infectious and non-infectious diseases of wildlife, and the public health and legal implications of treating wildlife.

This course consists of four (4) 2-hour Real Time Session, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test. Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to

• recognize the legal implications and public health concerns of accepting wildlife patients.
• use principles of care to accurately triage wildlife cases.
• apply emergency care to common North American wildlife patients.
• recognize the common syndromes of wild birds, mammals and reptiles/amphibians and how to diagnose and treat them, including common infectious and non-infectious diseases.

About the Instructors:
Sonia M. Hernandez is a wildlife veterinarian and ecologist. She is currently an assistant professor in a shared position between the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study at the University of Georgia. She received training in zoological medicine through a residence at Cornell University (1998-2001) is boarded in zoological medicine and has a PhD in Ecology. She obtained clinical experience as a zoo veterinarian and a private exotic animal and wildlife practitioner. Currently she conducts research to better understand how anthropogenic activities affect the health and disease prevalence of wild animals. She currently teaches various courses on wildlife disease investigation and management and conservation medicine.

Heather Wilson Barron is a wildlife veterinarian, is boarded by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Avian) and since December 2011 has been the Hospital Director at the Clinic for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) in Sanibel Island, FL. She has worked as a clinician and a researcher largely in an academic setting, but also in private practice. She has served as a consultant for both IDEXX and Antech Imaging Services, focusing on exotic/wild animal medicine. She was a leading instructor for Marvet in the Grand Cayman for 4 years and has taught numerous courses on avian, exotic and zoological medicine.

Week 2 (Real Time Session July 7, 2015)
Content:

• Common clinical syndromes of North American birds
• Common diseases of North American birds

Week 3 (Real Time Session July 14, 2015)
Content:

• Common clinical syndromes of North American mammals
• Common diseases of North American mammals

Week 4 (Real Time Session July 21, 2015)
Content:

• Common clinical syndromes of North American reptiles/amphibians
• Common diseases of North American reptiles/amphibians
• Wrap up and discussion
