Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians with an interest in allergy and
how it relates to dermatology. Participants should have a basic understanding of cutaneous anatomy,
physiology and immunology and have access to basic dermatology textbooks.

Course Information:
This course provides information for practicing small animal veterinarians
about many aspects of infectious cutaneous disease and ectoparasites.
Each lecture will present up to date information about pathophysiology of the
disease process, diagnostic tests and options as well as treatments.
Each hour will be given in a lecture format with participant polling and
weekly discussion boards. Friendly group interaction is encouraged.
Week one will focus on one of the most common skin problems in small animal
practice, that of bacterial pyoderma. Clinical examples and case studies
will be used to illustrate common presentations of the disease and practical
methods for diagnosis and treatment. This will include a discussion on the
problem of methicillin resistance as well as human health implications.
The second hour will focus on an update of the diagnosis and treatment
of dermatophytosis (ringworm). Individual diagnosis and treatment will be
discussed as well as brief information concerning catteries.
Additional information will be given on how to present the information to
owners and what they may need to do or not in the home environment.
Week two will begin with a discussion of cutaneous parasitology with an
update on new treatments and diagnostic methods currently available.
Many case examples will be presented in a discussion format with an emphasis
on practical application. A brief discussion will mention parasiticidal resistance.
The second hour will focus on zoonotic skin disease. Many examples will
be given discussing veterinary skin diseases which may be contagious
or infectious to humans. Public health information will be provided
in a practical format.

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- discuss the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial pyoderma and be able to
identify dogs and cats with possible bacterial skin disease.
- demonstrate an understanding of the mechanisms of methicillin
resistance and treatments available.
- discuss the diagnosis and treatment of cats with dermatophytosis
and understand the zoonotic implications.
Week 2 (Real Time Session September 20, 2017):

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- diagnose and treat common ectoparasites.
- discuss and identify new ectoparasiticides.
- demonstrate a basic understanding of resistance as it relates to parasiticides.
- demonstrate a working knowledge of common zoonotic skin diseases and parasites
with the implications to veterinary and human health.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
VIN Consultant and ACVD boarded dermatologist Mitchell D. Song received his veterinary
degree from Mississippi State University and completed a residency in dermatology at the
University of California, Davis. He is currently the owner of Animal Dermatology,
PC in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona USA.
