Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians with an interest in allergy
and how it relates to dermatology. Participants should have a basic understanding of cutaneous
anatomy, physiology and immunology, and have access to basic dermatology textbooks.

Course Information:
The first session will be a discussion of the pathophysiology and immunology
of pruritic skin disease. Controversies will be discussed. The session will
be primarily directed to practicing veterinarians. The session will familiarize
participants with the current state of the art knowledge of allergic and pruritic
skin diseases and how this knowledge may be used with new therapeutic interventions.
The end of the session will be a discussion of comorbidities which occur with
allergic dermatitis, why they occur and how they may be managed. These may include:
recurrent bacterial pyoderma, Malassezia sp. dermatitis and otitis externa.
The second session will be a discussion directed at the pathophysiology, diagnosis
and management of food allergy and cutaneous adverse food reactions. Information
about inflammatory bowel disease will not be included. The end of the second
session will be a compilation of miscellaneous pruritic skin diseases in the dog
and cat presented in a case format.
From the clinical perspective, this course will familiarize the participants
with many aspects of veterinary dermatology as related to the pruritic patient.
Both sessions will contain informative and practical information for veterinarians.
Week 1 (Real Time Session March 29, 2017):

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- briefly discuss the pathophysiology of allergic and pruritic skin
disease and how it may relate to treatment.
- recognize and discuss the various treatments available for atopic dermatitis.
- discuss comorbidities of allergic dermatitis and how to manage them.
Week 2 (Real Time Session April 5, 2017):
Food allergy: a dermatologist's perspective and practical case studies (VIN SKIN)
Presenter: Mitchell Song, DVM, DACVD
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- discuss the diagnosis and management of food allergies
and cutaneous adverse food reactions.
- better manage these types of cases based upon a deeper understanding
of allergic and pruritic skin disease.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Mitchell Song received
his veterinary degree from Mississippi State University and completed a residency
in dermatology at the University of California, Davis. He is currently the owner of
Animal Dermatology, PC in Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona USA.
