Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course will be open to veterinarians
actively interested in the diagnosis and treatment of external diseases
of the ear in small animals.

Course Description:
This course will provide a review of the basic principles for treating diseases of the
pinna and outer ear (horizontal and vertical ear canals).
This course consists of two (2) 2-hour Real Time Session, supplemental library materials,
interactive message board discussions, and a mandatory end-of-course test.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to
- discuss and correctly identify the anatomy of the pinna and outer ear.
- diagnose and treat bacterial and yeast infections including Pseudomonas sp. Otitis.
- diagnose and treat parasitic and allergic causes of otitis externa.
- discuss which medications are effective and what should be considered for success.
- diagnose and treat diseases of the canine and feline pinna, including
but not limited to pinnal vasculitis, seborrhea and aural hematomas.

About the Instructors:
VIN Consultant and ACVD boarded dermatologist
Mitchell Song received his veterinary degree from Mississippi
State University and completed a residency in dermatology at the University of
California, Davis. He is currently the owner of Animal Dermatology, PC in Scottsdale
and Phoenix, Arizona USA.
Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session March 1, 2015):
Anatomy and Physiology of the Canine/Feline Ear, Bacterial and Yeast Infections
Content:
- Anatomy and physiology of the ear (brief).
- Identification and treatment of bacterial infections.
- What to do about resistant ear infections.
- Diagnosis and treatment of Malassezia sp. Infections.
Week 2 (Real Time Session March 8, 2015):
Parasitic and Allergic Otitis, Diseases of the Pinna
Content:
- Parasites of the ear and pinna.
- Allergic otitis causes and treatment.
- Diseases of the pinna; diagnosis and treatment of vasculitis, seborrhea,
autoimmune diseases, hematomas.
