Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians
actively interested in veterinary dentistry.
Participants in the course should have an interest in taking better
care of the dental needs of their patients.
Although not required, it is strongly recommended that participants take the first module,
DENT109-0116: Veterinary Dentistry for the General Practitioner - Module 1, prior to
enrolling in this course.

Course Information:
The second of 2 modules, this course is designed to allow discussions of current techniques
used in veterinary dentistry. Veterinarians practicing all levels of veterinary dentistry
are invited to participate, from the veterinarian just interested in getting started
in veterinary dentistry to the Board Certified Veterinary Dentist. The course will start
out with oral examination and disease recognition, then cover prevention and treatment of
periodontal disease, and continue to intraoral radiographs.
Week 1 (Real Time Session March 7, 2016)

Advanced Veterinary Dentistry Dental Procedures: Periodontics, Endodontics, Restorations, and Orthodontics, p307.
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- recognize normal radiographic anatomy
- understand the fundamentals of dental radiographic interpretation:
periodontics, endodontics, and orthodontics
Week 2 (Real Time Session March 14, 2016)

Chapter 12, Exodontics (Extractions), p288.
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe the indications for exodontias
- describe the instrumentation for exodontias
- understand simple extraction techniques
- understand surgical extraction techniques
- understand how to perform multiple root extractions
- understand how to perform techniques for specific teeth
- recognize the indications for exodontia
- Understand the equipment and techniques for simple and surgical extractions
Week 3 (Real Time Session March 21, 2016)

Chapter 5, Local Anesthesia, p135.
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe the advantages of local dental blocks
- describe the various local anesthesia agents
- describe what each nerve block does
- understand the techniques used
Week 4 (Real Time Session March 28, 2016)

Format: Text/Audio
Required Reading (prior to March 28 Real Time Session):
Chapter 10, Feline Dentistry, p227.
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe current concepts in the treatment of tooth resorption
and stomatitis in the feline.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Steve Holmstrom was one of the two original VIN Dental Consultants.
He has co-authored the textbook which the course is based on, Veterinary Dental Techniques,
which is in its 3rd edition and in 4 languages. He has also authored Veterinary Dentistry
for the Technician and Office Staff and edited two editions of Veterinary Clinics of North America.
He is in a dental only practice in San Carlos, California.
