Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic will be open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists,
support staff, and veterinary teams actively interested in canine behavior and aggression issues.
This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 22-29312)
Course Information:
This course will provide an overview of canine aggression that is directed toward people.
A good understanding of learning theory and neurophysiology helps in the understanding and
treatment of Canine Aggression. This foundation allows a relevant history to be taken.
After taking this course, you should be more confident in your ability to assess the
prognosis for each case presented to you and to formulate an appropriate management strategy.
Week 1 (Real Time Session August 7, 2017):
Classical and Operant Conditioning

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe learning theory including classical and operant conditioning.
- understand behavior theory and the neurophysiology of aggression.
Week 2 (Real Time Session August 14, 2017):
Aggression directed toward people
Presenters: Debbie Calnon and Kersti Seksel

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand categories, aetiology, and history taking as they relate to aggression cases.
- enhance their client communication skills.
- identify when euthanasia is appropriate.
- identify prognostic indicators in relation to aggression cases.
Week 3 (Real Time Session August 21, 2017):
Treatment Strategies
Presenters: Debbie Calnon and Kersti Seksel
Format: Text/Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand basic treatment strategies including management, behavior modification
and medication of aggressive behavior in dogs.
- utilize equipment that may assist with aggression cases.
- assess the prognosis of cases presented.
- formulate an appropriate treatment strategy.
Week 4 (Real Time Session August 28, 2017):
Treatment Strategies

Format: Text/Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand an Overview of Treatment Strategies including behavior modification
and medication that may assist with aggression cases.
- utilize equipment that may assist with aggression cases.
- assess the prognosis of cases presented.
- formulate an appropriate treatment and management strategy.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenters:
Debbie Calnon has joined Dr Kersti Seksel to teach a number of
VIN behavior courses. She also collaborates with Kersti teaching the Distance
Education course in Behavioral Medicine for the Centre of Veterinary Education
at the University of Sydney and in writing chapters for behavior texts.
Debbie enjoys teaching behavior topics to veterinarians, veterinary nurses,
trainers and other groups interested in small animal behavior. She is passionate
about promoting the importance of behavioral medicine to the veterinary profession.
Debbie values the opportunity to share ideas and experiences on VIN and appreciates
the benefits of being part of the supportive VIN community.
Kersti Seksel is a registered veterinary specialist in behavioral
medicine in Australia, New Zealand, USA and Europe. She works sees behaviour cases
in Sydney, her main base as well the rest of Australia. She teaches the Distance
Education course in Behavioral Medicine for the Centre of Veterinary Education at
the University of Sydney, is an adjunct senior lecturer at Charles Sturt University
in Australia, presents education courses all over the world in behavioral medicine,
and writes for scientific journals, textbooks, as well as popular magazines.
She is a regular presenter in the media and currently chairs the Animal Welfare
Advisory Council for NSW Government and loves being part of the wider VIN community.

VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
