Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists,
support staff, and veterinary teams actively interested in feline behavior and elimination issues.
This course has been submitted for RACE approval for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists,
support staff, and veterinary teams.
This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists (RACE #22-19162).
Course Information:
The treatment of feline elimination disorders requires a basic understanding of
why cats might begin to soil on surfaces and locations other than their designated
litter area. Marking problems for example may respond to drug and pheromone therapy,
but may not be significantly improved until the cause of the marking can be identified
and treated. On the other hand, cats may begin to soil in locations unacceptable to
their owners if there are medical or behavioral problems that lead to avoidance of
their litter area, or if they develop preferences for other surfaces or sites in the home.
This seminar will review the causes of elimination in unacceptable locations, in order to
develop appropriate and effective treatment protocols.
Week 1 (Real Time Session February 22, 2016)
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Understand why cats may eliminate in inappropriate locations
- Differentiate marking from other forms of feline elimination issues
- Make the diagnosis: the medical and behavioral workup for feline elimination disorders
- Use therapeutic options - how behavior modification, environmental modifications
and medication are used in treatment
Week 2 (Real Time Session February 29, 2016)
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Treat feline marking behavior
- Treat housesoiling cats - re-establishing regular litter use
