This
intermediate course will be open to veterinarians interested in
integrative medicine and the use of herbs in veterinary practice for the support
of patients with liver and kidney disease.

Course Information:
Your clients are using herbs in their animals and want to use herbs.
Where is the evidence for herbal medicine in veterinary practice? How do they work?
We show you how you can you treat challenging liver cases and acute and chronic kidney
disease in practice using herbs alongside conventional medicine. Join us in this lively
short course which will give you practical skills and knowledge to use herbs
straight away safely and effectively.
Week 1 (Real Time Session February 4, 2016)
Presenter: Dr. Barbara Fougere, BVMS, MA
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe herbal modes of action and use.
- Discuss the historic use of herbs in veterinary medicine.
- Discuss the evidence supporting the efficacy of herbal medicine,
current research with a focus on liver and kidney disease, and herbal/drug interactions.
- Appreciate that the demand for herbal medicine and the science underpinning it, is growing.
Week 2 (Real Time Session February 11, 2016)

Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Discuss the evidence and rationale for using Western and Chinese herbs to
support patients with liver and kidney disease.
- Use Western herbs to support patients with challenging liver and
kidney disease safely and effectively.
- Use Chinese herbs to support patients with challenging liver disease safely and effectively.
Week 3 (Real Time Session February 18, 2016)
Presenter: Dr. Steve Marsden, ND, MSOM
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Use Chinese herbs to support patients suffering from acute and chronic kidney disease.
- Describe the role of circulation and endothelial function in the development of disease.
- Understand the role of herbs in altering the pathophysiology of chronic disease.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenters:
Dr. Steve Marsden received his doctorate in veterinary medicine at the
University of Saskatchewan in 1988. At the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in
Portland, Oregon he obtained a doctorate in Naturopathic medicine, a Master's of Science
in Oriental Medicine, and his licensure in Acupuncture and Diplomat status in Chinese
Herbology. He treats both pets and people in his Edmonton, Alberta practice. He has
instructed veterinarians in Chinese Medicine at IVAS, Tufts, and AVAC. He is a member
of the American Herbalists Guild. He is the co-author of several texts, including the
Manual of Natural Veterinary Medicine. He is a frequent guest lecturer to veterinary
audiences worldwide. He is perhaps one of the best known and highly qualified Veterinary
Chinese Herbal Medicine masters worldwide. He was awarded Canadian Veterinarian of the
Year in 2009 and was honored as Herbal Educator of the Year by AHVMA in 2010.
Dr. Barbara Fougere is a 1986 graduate from Murdoch University Veterinary
School Western Australia. She practices in Sydney, Australia exclusively in Veterinary
Integrative Medicine. She has served on the as President of IVAS and VBMA, and is Chairperson
for the American College Veterinary Herbal Medicine and one of the first veterinarians
to be certified in Veterinary Botanical Medicine worldwide. She holds a Master's degree
in Herbal Medicine and a Bachelor's degree in Complementary Medicine as well as a Master's
in the field of Education and Training. She has coauthored two veterinary texts Veterinary
Herbal Medicine (2007) and Integrating Complementary Medicine into Veterinary Practice (2008).
She was awarded the AHVMA Practitioner of the Year in 2010 and Educator of the Year in 2011.
Both instructors teach the accredited post graduate qualifications Graduate Diplomas in
Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine, Veterinary Western Herbal Medicine, and Veterinary Acupuncture.
