Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists
interested in learning more about holistic methods, the science that supports these methods,
and how these are currently being used in veterinary medicine.

Course Information:
The first of 2 modules, this course provides an introduction to holistic medicine,
acupuncture, herbal medicine, energy medicine, and aromatherapy. The course covers the
theory behind each holistic method, any scientific support for the efficacy of the method,
and the appropriate use of these holistic methods in veterinary medicine.
Week 1 (Real Time Session January 13, 2016):
Holistic Medicine Overview
Presenter: Doug Knueven, DVM
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Properly use the terminology associated with holistic medicine.
- Discuss the concepts that characterize holistic veterinary medicine.
- Discuss the philosophical underpinnings of the holistic approach to life and medicine.
Week 2 (Real Time Session January 20, 2016):
Acupuncture
Presenter: Neal Sivula, DVM, PhD, FAAVA
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe the history of veterinary acupuncture.
- Outline the steps involved in the diagnosis and formulation of an acupuncture treatment plan.
- List the various techniques of acupuncture treatment.
- Describe the way acupuncture works from both a neurophysiologic and Traditional Chinese Medical standpoint.
- Discuss the scientific evidence that supports the validity of acupuncture.
- Discuss the training programs available in veterinary acupuncture and the legalities of treatment.
Week 3 (Real Time Session January 27, 2016):
Herbal Medicine
Presenter: Barbara Fougere, BVMS, MA
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe the evidence base supporting the use of herbal medicine.
- Recognize when it is, and is not, appropriate to use herbal medicine.
- Make immediate use of the 5 herbs covered during the lecture.
- Discuss the science that supports the efficacy of the 5 herbs covered during the lecture.
- Discuss the qualifications needed for proficiency in herbal medicine.
Week 4 (Real Time Session February 3, 2016):
Energy Medicine/Aromatherapy
Presenter: Susan Wagner, DVM, MS, ACVIM
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- Describe the theoretical ideas behind energy medicine and aromatherapy.
- Discuss the scientific evidence that supports the validity of energy medicine and aromatherapy.
- Recognize when it is, and is not, appropriate to use energy medicine.
- Recognize when it is, and is not, appropriate to use aromatherapy.
- Discuss the qualifications needed for proficiency in energy medicine.
- Discuss the qualifications needed for proficiency in each aromatherapy.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook: There is no required textbook for this course.
About the Presenters:
Dr. Doug Knueven has been practicing integrative-holistic medicine since 1995.
He is certified in veterinary acupuncture by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society,
in veterinary chiropractic by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association, and
in veterinary Chinese herbology by Healing Oasis. He has been an active member of the
American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association since 1997. Doug has successfully integrated
multiple holistic modalities into his three-DVM, small animal practice and has lectured on
various topics of holistic veterinary medicine at over 40 veterinary conferences including
the AVMA annual conference in 2008 and the NAVC conference in 2009.
Dr. Barbara Fougere is qualified in both Chinese and Western herbal medicine
holding Graduate Diplomas and a Master's degree in herbal medicine. She teaches on the post
graduate qualifications Graduate Diploma of Veterinary Western Herbal Medicine and Veterinary
Chinese Herbal Medicine and the IVAS Certification course in Chinese herbal medicine.
She has almost 30 years' experience in integrating these therapies and is a co-author on the
textbook
Veterinary Herbal Medicine. She has been the president of the Veterinary
Botanical Medicine Association and is the current chairperson of the newly incorporated
American College of Veterinary Botanical medicine. She enjoys growing herbs and uses
herbs regularly in her practice.
Dr. Neal Sivula has been certified in veterinary acupuncture by the
International Veterinary Acupuncture Society since 2001. He has an Advanced Certification
in veterinary acupuncture from the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture (AAVA) as well.
Dr. Sivula is a past President and board member of the AAVA and has presented continuing education
lectures in acupuncture at regional and national meetings for the last seven years.
In his practice he treats about 15 patients daily with acupuncture.
Dr. Susan Wagner has been practicing energy and integrative medicine for 20 years.
She is a Level IV Healing Touch for Animals practitioner and has also studied Reiki
and Reconnective Healing. She has been lecturing on energy medicine at veterinary
conferences since 2005 and is a team leader for the Integrative Medicine elective
at The Ohio State University Veterinary College. Dr. Wagner also lectures on aromatherapy
at OSU's School of Pharmacy and teaches energy medicine in the undergraduate Integrative
Medicine minor. She has written articles on energy medicine for Animal Wellness and
Healing Touch Program magazines. Dr. Wagner practices integrative medicine at MedVet
Medical & Cancer Centers for Pets.
